Service in the age of Siri

“The greatest among you must be a servant.”    - Matt. 23:11

We live in an incredibly connected world. We carry a tiny super-computer in our pockets, our watches give us instant health data, our cars can tell us where to go (and even drive themselves!), and nothing is outside of the quick call of “Hey Siri” or “ok, Google”. We want answers, and we want them now (cue a Verruca Salt from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory reaction). Waiting for 5 seconds is now an inconvenience.

When I read the gospels and experience the story of Jesus, I find a different pattern to His life. Jesus was never too busy. He acted with great purpose and care, but He was never too busy to see and serve people. Jesus did not let His circumstances constrict His view of people in need. He saw those people that others had tossed aside. From a tax collector to a blind man, to a woman sitting by a well, Jesus saw people in need.

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Matt. 20:28

Look Up

When we serve we reject the idea that everything is about “me” and what I want and need. When we serve we are putting action with our words and we are telling people with those actions that they matter to us and God. There is a cost to our hurried lives, and many times the cost is that we don’t even notice opportunities around us to serve.

Take a moment today and look up. Put down the phone, look around, and see who you can serve. You never know what you might find. Difference Makers are available to step in to help as God leads. In an automated world, acts of kindness stand apart.
